SADDLEWORTH School Year 10s are through to the fourth round of the English Schools’ Football Association Under-15 PlayStation Schools’ Cup following a thrilling 5-4 victory against Chorlton High School.

The local lads enjoyed the better of the exchanges throughout the first half and they went into the break 4-2 up thanks to a Purtill brace and one goal each from Howarth and Ireland.

The tables turned somewhat after the restart and it was the visitors who had the better of the play, but in a closely-contested cup tie, Saddleworth eventually booked their place in the next stage with Griffiths grabbing the winner.

Newman suffered a double blow with two sides making early exits from the national knock-out competitions.

The Year Sevens suffered a 3-0 reverse against Parrs Wood High School from Manchester in round three of the ESFA nine-a-side Under-12s PlayStation Schools’ Cup.

Newman’s Year Nines are out of the Under-14s tournament after going down 4-1 to St Monica’s RC High in Bury.
