Second-half goal denies firsts home victory joy

HOCKEY: OLDHAM Ladies Hockey Club’s first team was faced with challenging conditions for the visit of third-placed Deeside Ramblers in North Hockey Women’s League Division Two South-West.
It was wet, cold and windy at Newman College — but the hosts weren’t deterred as they clinched a 1-1 draw.
Deeside started the brighter, pushing back Oldham for the opening 10 minutes, but good work by goalkeeper Sarah Simpson kept the visitors at bay. A switch saw Oldham gain more of the ball, and they went ahead after the tireless forward line won the ball on the half-way line.
Louise Howard played a quick one-two with Karen Rowley. Howard’s shot was saved, but the ball was eventually returned to Rowley, who slotted home at the back post.
Howard nearly made it two but the shot was wide, while the opposite end Daisy May Ward and captain Fran Lees were impressive in defence.
Deeside came out fighting in the second half, but Oldham continued to find success, with the midfield and forwards harassing their opponents at every opportunity.
Oldham was stunned when the visitors drew level from a short corner.
