Hugo leads way for Heyside

IF Heyside do go on to clinch top honours this season, they can reflect on a key weekend in the Armstrongs Office Furniture Saddleworth and District Cricket League season.

While Mark Barnes’ boys enjoyed a 67-run success over fellow championship contenders Moorside, third-placed Bamford Fieldhouse were stunned by improving Uppermill.

Coupled with Hollinwood being docked a bucketload of points (148) for fielding an ineligible player, Heyside have suddenly put daylight themselves and their closest rivals.

Austerlands are their nearest challengers, albeit 38 points behind, after overcoming Stayley at Millbrook (see below).

Heyside’s South African professional Roelof Hugo stepped up to the mark to score 108 in the first versus second clash at Little Hey Street.

Assisted by Nick Campbell’s 82, they helped post 260 for eight, although Moorside captain Lee Warburton felt his side had let the hosts off the hook by spilling several catches.

Richard Baines and Francis Sutherland built a solid foundation for the visitors by putting on more than 100 for the first wicket.

But once Sutherland was dismissed for 54, wickets tumbled at regular intervals.

There was still time for Baines to crack a century — the former Moorside skipper made 102 — but it was Heyside’s day.

The best of the home side’s bowlers was Dean Watkinson, who repeated Alan Durose’s earlier effort for Moorside of taking four wickets.

Heyside’s hopes of winning their first title since 1995 were boosted by Uppermill’s shock three-wicket defeat of Bamford at Hollin Lane.

Inspired Will Dornan’s figures of five for 35, Matt Taylor’s men restricted the reigning champions to 135 for nine from their 45 overs.

In reply, opener Zeeshan Khan kept a cool head to finish unbeaten on 66 and young David Wood provided excellent support on 25 not out as Uppermill notched their fifth straight win.

Bamford professional Naved Arif Gondal took six of the wickets to fall for 61 runs.

Qasar Riaz struck 133 for Hollinwood, who piled up 295 for five against Saddleworth at Well-i-Hole.

The home side succumbed to 186 all out, Rashid Khan doing the damage with seven for 76.

Runs were hard to come by in the other two matches.

Needing only 126 to defeat Droylsden, Glodwick were dismissed for 107 at Oakfield. Michael Schofield pulled it out of the fire for Gareth Dent’s troops with seven for 53.

Meanwhile, Greenfield were grateful to Johnny Ainley’s unbeaten 61 in a two-wicket win over Friarmere, who crashed to 111 all out thanks to Peter Gill’s five for 24 at Ladhill Lane.

AN exemplary fielding display saw holders Shaw through to the semi-finals of the Saddleworth and District Cricket League’s Twenty20 Cup after a 26-run defeat of Austerlands.

Richard Harrington hit 61 in Shaw’s total of 148 for eight in a tie reduced to 16 overs per side because of rain. The Young brothers, Andy and Adam, took three wickets apiece.

Aided by a series of stunning catches, teenagers Kane Fullalove and Adam Good grabbed four wickets each as Austerlands crashed to 122 all out in reply.

The other second-round ties were decided by bowl-outs, cricket’s version of the penalty shoot-out, after rain scuppered any hope of play.

Uppermill, who will host finals day, joined Shaw in the last four of the competition, sponsored by 20-20 Vision, after they knocked out Heyside.

Hollinwood saw off Stayley in sudden-death — both sides had more than a dozen goes at the stumps before Rashid Khan was successful — and Moorside got the better of Glodwick after play was abandoned with the home side on 93 for one.
