OLDHAM town team star Mark McGeeney was in action today at the BDO Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships, bidding to reach the quarter-final stage.
The Stockport-based player, seeded 11th in his tournament finals debut, took on 2015 World champion Scott Mitchell in the last 16 after comfortably seeing off Sweden’s Peter Sajwani in the first round.
McGeeney, nicknamed ‘the Gladiator’, was confident of upsetting Mitchell in the run-up to their meeting after a comprehensive 3-0 win against Sajwani on Tuesday.
Should McGeeney progress, he will meet the winner of the second round clash between Richard Veenstra and Martin Atkins tomorrow.
