Heyside defy the elements

FOOTBALL: HEYSIDE defied blizzard conditions to register a well-deserved 2-0 win against Skelmanthorpe.
It was bitterly cold at Crompton House as Geoff Howard’s men took three points to keep them on top of Huddersfield League Division One. Heyside are unbeaten at home in the league for a season and a half, but struggled to impose themselves as snow and a strong wind made life hard work.
After an hour midfield man Johnny Pauley opened the scoring, and nearly nearly made it two five minutes later, but the visiting goalkeeper produced a spectacular save.
As Skelmanthorpe pushed for an equaliser, Heyside began to pick holes in their opponents’ defence and in the 75th minute Chris Ollerton raced on to a Danny Wooliscroft through-ball and slotted home to make the game safe.
Two similar efforts fell to the same man in the final 10 minutes, but the ex-Oldham Hulmeians striker wasted an opportunity to clock up a late hat-trick.
