Geener targets another cup-final shock

PAUL Geener orchestrated Rochdale Mayfield’s last defeat in the Standard Cup — and is plotting a repeat tomorrow in the final of this year’s Napier Windows-sponsored competition.
Now coach of Saddleworth Rangers, he admits his side is the underdog at Manor Park (kick-off 11.45am), against opponents from the National Conference League top-flight. It was a similar scenario in 2013 when, in charge of Waterhead, he watched Terry Fitzgerald land the drop to clinch a memorable 25-24 triumph.
“I remember it well as I was stood right next to Terry Fitz’,” said Geener. “I think Mayfield were a bit underprepared that day. They thought they could just turn up and win. I’m sure they won’t make the same mistake twice. They are a good side and won’t come into the final half-hearted.”
Rangers are aiming to break the stranglehold of Mayfield in the Oldham Amateur League-organised competition. The Castleton outfit are looking to keep their hands on the trophy for the third year running. Rangers were the losers in 2015, losing 36-16.
A positive start to the NCL Division Two season — they have won their opening two games — has given Geener cause for optimism.
