Gina Brierley awarded basketball scholarship to Tampa, Florida
GINA Brierley is hoping to hit the heights in America.
The 18-year-old, from Chadderton, has gained a basketball scholarship in Tampa, Florida, and is currently settling into her new surroundings.
A former pupil at Mills Hill and North Chadderton school, Gina will spend four years in America, honing her skills on court and in the classroom.
The teenager has been based at Loreto College, Hulme, which has a close partnership with the Amaechi Basketball Centre.
She is point guard for the Manchester Mystics, who play in the Women's British Basketball League.
How did Gina land herself such a prestigious position?
She explained: "I sent basketball footage of myself, which showed my ability, to various colleges in America, and it was then a case of waiting for responses.
"Fortunately, I had a choice.
"The coach at Tampa sold it to me. He was really friendly and family orientated. That was important being such a long way from home.
"The campus is gorgeous and the weather, being in Florida, is really good.
"I've devoted my life to basketball and feel fortunate to get this opportunity."
Whether Gina, who caught the basketball bug 12 years ago, will be able to enjoy much of the warm sunshine is another matter.
College life in America is tough, with studies, training, sessions in the gym and games at weekends. Factor in homework as well - Gina is studying internet business - then there isn't much time left to explore the Sunshine State.
Gina talents were recognised on the international stage last year, having represented England women's under-18s team at the prestigious European Championships tournament in Romania.
