Close call in seniors open

WERNETH’S Seniors Open was won by home player Mike Wallace and Blackley’s Brian Gwynne who had 42 points for the fourball Stableford.

Runners up, on a card play-off, were Neil Hughes (Werneth) and Mike Sanders (Lightcliffe), while third went to Paul Glover (Werneth) and Fairfield’s Jack Young (41 points).

In the Combined Age competition, run in conjunction, Royton and Crompton pair Jack Booth and Mark Hambley came out on top in the 130-139 section with 40 points.

The 140-plus section went to Werneth duo Peter Lomas and Tom McNamara, also with 40 points.

Ian Wood topped the field in the Mellor Cup qualifier, shooting 80-17-63 to hold off Liam Dwayre (72-8-64).

MARK HUGHES won the Captain’s Prize round two at BLACKLEY with 81-13-68, on the card from Rob Anderson (83-15-68) and Alistair White (77-9-68).

The midweek medal went to Steve Newton (80-13-67) from Julian Robinson (69-1-68) and Alistair White (77-8-69), who was third on the card from Gareth Saxon (80-11-69) and Alan Lane (71-2-69).

A 12-Hole Stableford at STAMFORD saw Alan Monks, a vice-president of the club, come in with a creditable 31 points, beating Richard Taylor on a card play-off.

Captain, Ian Grimsditch won the medal round with an excellent 70-5-65, which was also the lowest gross for the day. Second place went to Alan Newell with 82-16-66 on the card from Richard Taylor and Tony McCluskey with 76-10-66 and 78-12-66 respectively.

RICHARD Cotton emerged as the winner of SADDLEWORTH’S monthly medal, three shots clear of Steve Pullen in second.

Cotton carded 79-11-68, ahead of Pullen (76-5-71) and third-placed Matt Woolley (83-11-72).

In the captain’s invitation, M Dervan and P Prior’s tally of 44pts was enough to land them victory on a card play-off from Nick Marner and Danny Heap.

The duo of Jamie Heywood and Steve Rennie were in third with 41 points, pushing N Mooney and M Whelan into fourth on the card.

Ken Mills and Ken Holt finished on top of the pile in the qualifier for the Halifax and Huddersfield District Golf Union with 43 points, clear of Sam Halliwell and David George on a card play-off, while Nigel Hughes and Phil Paxford were third on 41 points.

CROMPTON AND ROYTON held a two-division singles Stableford competition and Alasdair Cameron came out on top in the top tier with a score of 38 points.

He finished ahead of Jack Bottomley-Clift on a card play-off, while the trio of Rob Hogarth, Alan Hopkinson Junior and Andrew Hirst were all a point behind on 37.

In the second division, Josh Briddon was first on 43 points, ahead of Maurice Nicholson on 39 and three men — vice-captain Keith Banham, Alan Hopkinson and Jim Booth — on 35.

The top prize in the three-division medal was taken by Graham Walker, who finished with a card of 75-8-67.

Second place in division one went to Dave Briddon (74-6-68), with third shared between Kris Sutcliffe (70-1-69) and Mark Pickering (78-9-69).

Josh Briddon (82-15-67) was again a winner in the second division, with Stuart Thompson (80-11-69) edging out Terry Goff (84-15-69) on a card play-off. Alan Hopkinson Junior (80-10-70) and Steve Oldham (81-11-70) were next in line.

Dave Hopkins (85-17-68) celebrated success in division three, with Alan Barrott (86-17-69) in second spot.


NICK DEME produced his best golf of the season so far to qualify for the final of the Leeds Cup.

The 34-year-old from Failsworth shot a one-over-par 71 in a qualifier for the PGA major at Sale where he finished in a share for fourth place.

Deme, who is assistant professional at Brookdale, was four shots adrift of winner Lee Rooke, from Vale of Llangollen.

Deme will now compete in the 54-hole final at Leeds Golf Club on August 18. 19 and 20.
