Fourth arrest made in connection with Freehold Metrolink stop attack

Date published: 26 March 2018

A fourth arrest has been made by officers investigating an attempted murder in Chadderton.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested this morning (Monday) in connection with the attack at Freehold Metrolink stop on Thursday, March 8.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody for questioning.

At 9.36pm that day a man was getting off a tram on Block Lane when a group of passengers from the same tram began hitting him as he attempted to leave the platform.

The 49-year-old was then subjected to a sustained, unprovoked attack after being knocked unconscious.

Fortunately a tram travelling in the opposite direction saw the ongoing assault and the driver stopped to intervene, as well as passengers.

Officers released CCTV to the media and public in a bid to get more information about the incident.

On Saturday (March 24) officers arrested three 15-year-old boys – two on suspicion of attempted murder and one on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Detectives questioning them were successfully granted a 30-hour warrant for further detention.
