UPDATED: Arrest after more threatening emails were sent to schools

Date published: 28 March 2018

Detectives investigating a second round of emails containing threats which were sent to schools - including in Oldham - have arrested an 18-year old in Abbots Langley in Hertfordshire.

The teenager was detained last night (Wednesday) after reports came in that schools were reporting receiving the emails to Greater Manchester Police, along with other forces across the country.

The schools involved haven’t been named, but are understood to have reported the incident to Greater Manchester Police, who in turn have said they are looking into the situation.

However, as was the case on Monday, March 19, they don’t believe the threats made in the emails to be credible.

Around 400 schools were closed on March 19 after receiving the threats which did hit three schools in Oldham, including Mills Hill Primary in Chadderton, Blackshaw Lane Primary and Nursery School in Royton and Delph Primary School.

Rushcroft Primary School in Shaw was also understood to have received the email.

Along with the schools in our area, a number in Cheshire, as well as others across Greater Manchester, have reported receiving more emails over the past 24 hours.

The contents of the communications aren’t known and come on the back of a first batch, sent on March 19 to schools up and down the country.

At that time the National Crime Agency said they were taking the emails ‘very seriously’. However, they didn’t believe the threats to be genuine.

A 19-year old man was arrested in Watford, Hertfordshire on Wednesday, March 21, on suspicion of blackmail and making malicious communications by email.
