Local MP hits out at 'complete shower' after Davis' exit

Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon has slammed the Government over Brexit and branded them a “complete shower” after the man in charge of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU quit.

David Davis resigned late last night (Sunday), dealing yet another blow to Prime Minister Theresa May’s hopes of uniting the party behind her as the deadline for leaving the European Union draws ever closer.

Mr Davis walked out of the cabinet just days after all of the Conservative’s top team met at the PM’s summer retreat of Checkers to thrash out a deal over the course of more than 12 hours of meetings.

In his letter, he said he was no longer the best person to deliver the Prime Minister’s Brexit plan as he didn’t “believe” in it.

Now Oldham West and Royton’s MP has added his thoughts on the situation in a Tweet this morning (Monday), claiming the whole saga hasn’t changed despite Mr Davis’ walking away from the cabinet.

“Brexit was always about managing the internal tensions in the Tories, nothing has changed.” Mr McMahon said, before adding: “The risk to the economy and jobs is significant and it won’t be Boris, Gove, Davis, Mogg or the rest who will pay the price.

The UK is due to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019, after the EU referendum back in 2016 asked the British public is they wanted to stay or go from the Brussels based group of countries.

In his letter, Mr Davis continued: “The general direction of policy will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one.”

In response, Mrs May admitted that she was “sorry” he was leaving but disagreed with his assessment of her Brexit plan: “I do not agree with your characterisation of the policy we agreed at cabinet on Friday.”

Mr Davis’ decision to quit the cabinet has been backed by some Eurosceptic within the Tory party including Peter Bone MP, who described his decision as a “principled and brave decision”, adding: “The PM’s proposals for a Brexit in name only are not acceptable.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn claims Mr Davis’ resignation shows “Theresa May has no authority left and is incapable of delivering Brexit.”
