GCSE results day: Terrific progress continues at Oasis Academy

Oasis Academy Oldham’s students had a great deal to celebrate this morning as they secured another impressive set of GCSE results.

The academy has made significant progress over the last two years.

Last Summer it was recognised as being in the top 20 most improved schools in the country and, just a few months ago, Oasis Academy Oldham was shortlisted for the Greater Manchester Secondary School of the Year award.

Nigel Whittle, the outgoing Principal, said that the Class of 2018 should not only be praised for broadly matching last year’s record results, they should also be recognised for showing the importance of community and teamwork.

Mr Whittle said: “Our students should be incredibly proud. They have worked tirelessly to, in many cases, exceed their own goals and expectations.

"They have also collectively ensured that the progress we have made over the last two years has been maintained.

“More students than ever leave Oasis Oldham with English and maths at both 4+ and 5+ despite grade boundaries significantly increasing.

"Three times as many people secured a pass in Geography than in 2015 and the improvement seen in the Modern Foreign Languages department has been stunning.”

Mr Whittle added: “What makes this set of results stand out though is the context in which they were achieved.”

Among the smiling faces was Alisha Khanum, Asha Ahmed and Osaru Obasogie  who secured a raft of top grades.

Alisha, who was celebrating three 9s, said: “I am over-the-moon. I could not have done this without the help and support of my family and the staff at Oasis Academy Oldham.”

Osaru added: “I never would have believed I would have got all 9s, 8s and 7s across nearly all my subjects. I have achieved more than I could have ever hoped for.”

Last Summer, Oasis Academy Oldham welcomed a large number of students from Collective Spirit, a local school that was closing following a very difficult Ofsted inspection and poor student outcomes.

“We broadly matched our best-ever results even though a significant number of the year group had been with us for less than 12 months," added Mr Whittle.

“Our existing students welcomed those young people from Collective Spirit into our community. Together they have supported one another to overcome the challenging secondary education that some of our new students had previously received, and pushed each other all of the way to secure such impressive results.

“This really is testament to the importance of the spirit we work so hard to instil in our students.

"They leave Oasis Academy Oldham not just with strong results, but as young people our community can be proud of.”
