Monday morning city commuters beware

Date published: 09 September 2018

Commuters heading into Greater Manchester are being urged to plan ahead and allow more time for their journeys tomorrow morning (Monday) due to major roadworks and busier roads as people continue to return to work, schools and colleges after the summer holidays.

Last week saw traffic levels increase and public transport more busy, but it’s likely that tomorrow will be busier still as students and people who may have taken late summer breaks also get back into their weekly commute.

Drivers are encouraged to carefully consider their journeys into Manchester and Salford city centres and look at alternative options.

This is due to a year-long programme of major roadworks, being delivered by Manchester and Salford City Councils, which has seen work start to improve six key junctions on Regent Road, Trinity Way and A57 Mancunian Way.

To help people plan their journey during the work, TfGM has created a Manchester and Salford Inner Relief Route (MSIRR) travel advice page at: www.tfgm.com/travel-updates/regent-road.

With significant delays predicted on Regent Road and the A57 Mancunian Way and likely on and around the M60 and M602, TfGM is encouraging motorists to consider using one of the many Park and Ride sites across Greater Manchester and continue the rest of their journey by bus or tram.

People with shorter journeys can also look at cycling and walking as an alternative to driving, with TfGM producing a cycling map showing recommended routes between Salford and Manchester.

People who have to drive are advised to use the M60 at different points to reach Manchester and Salford city centres rather than the M602.

Wherever possible, commuters are urged to consider public transport for their Monday morning commute.

Northern and Transpennine Express are expecting to run their scheduled timetable across the Greater Manchester rail network, with no planned engineering works or disruption scheduled for Monday.

And on the buses, while all routes will be busy, services are expected to run as normal.

Across the Metrolink network, a full service is anticipated to operate on all lines.

owever, services will be busy and so passengers are encouraged to consider catching an earlier or later tram than usual.

Due to a nationwide issue, Metrolink passengers may be aware there have been problems with the ‘get me there’ mobile ticket app during the week, meaning some users have been unable to download their ticket.

The service supplier has been working to fix the app and continues to work over the weekend, but Metrolink is advising get me there app customers to arrive early at their stop on Monday morning and use ticket vending machines in case the app is not in full working order by then.
