There were words of praise from the Mayor of Oldham as the Debt Advice Service and Oldham Libraries launched their bid to make Oldham’s future brighter.
Last Friday, locals and officials met at Library Oldham for the start of their partnership with the Debt Advice Service, a local firm who specialise in debt-related advice.
The scheme arrived not a moment too soon, with 2012 estimates placing the borough above the national average in terms of difficulties in making credit or loan repayments.
These pressures can have an adverse effect on an individual’s mental health and even put them at greater suicide risk.
This innovative partnership aims to relieve some of the burden.
Mayor of Oldham Councillor Javid Iqbal, who attended the launch, endorsed the scheme, describing it as “fantastic for the town”.
Councillor Abdul Malik was also impressed by the plans.
He said: “This is a really worthwhile partnership and I will be looking to extend it to my ward of Coldhurst.”
