A family run farm in Saddleworth is preparing to welcome members of the public for Open Farm Sunday, offering visitors the chance to learn more about sustainable farming and meet its pedigree Ryeland sheep.

The event forms part of a nationwide initiative aimed at connecting people with food production and modern farming practices.

The small working farm, which produces meat and wool from its pedigree Ryeland flock, will take part in Open Farm Sunday for the second year running.

Animal welfare and sustainable farming are central to the business, which is a member of Linking Environment And Farming, the organisation that promotes environmentally responsible food and farming.

To provide a more personal experience, the farm will welcome 50 visitors across five guided groups of ten people.

Each group will take part in a one hour tour, meeting lambs, sheep and chickens while learning about livestock care, wool production and the day to day realities of running a working farm.

A spokesperson for the farm said, "We are passionate about doing things properly and believe that good welfare is the foundation of everything we do.

"Open Farm Sunday gives us a fantastic opportunity to share that passion with the local community and help people understand where their food and clothing fibres come from."

Visitors will have the opportunity to get close to farm animals, ask questions and gain a better understanding of how local farms contribute to food production while managing the countryside and supporting the environment.

The event is part of the annual Open Farm Sunday initiative, which encourages farms across the country to open their gates and engage with local communities.
