Kerris gears up to show off her considerable World skills

Date published: 13 September 2018

Oldham technician Kerris Boulton is set to face some of the most talented individuals in Britain in the final of WorldSkills UK LIVE.

Every year, across more than 50 competitions, the most talented apprentices and students in the UK compete against each other in their chosen skill in the hope of reaching the national finals at WorldSkills UK LIVE.

The competition focuses on four key areas of industry: infrastructure, health, digital and business, and engineering.

This year, 3,000 hopefuls stepped up to the plate – and Kerris Boulton was one of them.

Oldhamer Kerris is an apprentice specialist support technician at the University of Manchester whose impressive skills have earned her a place alongside seven others in her category in the final.

The purpose of the competition is to inspire young people to be ambitious in their pursuit of skills, as well as raising levels of expertise and setting a high benchmark for the UK’s training programmes.

Perhaps these kinds of opportunities are key to ending Britain’s persistent productivity gap, a problem that has placed the UK behind other developed economies for years and that economists have consistently struggled to pin down.

Competitors in WorldSkills are proven to go further in their chosen career path and the event is a great chance to showcase the best the UK has to offer.

The competition will take place from November 15-17 and eligible finalists may be lucky enough to join the WorldSkills UK training and development programme for WorldSkills Shanghai 2021.
