UPDATED: Cyclist dies following collision with car

Police were called to Park Parade, close to the junction with Scotland Street, to reports of a collision

A cyclist who was injured in a collision with a car in Ashton has sadly died.

Around 6:45am on Tuesday (September 11), police were called to Park Parade, close to the junction with Scotland Street, to reports of a collision.

Officers attended and established that a black Ford Fiesta was driving on Park Parade when it was involved in a collision with a man riding a bicycle.

The cyclist, who is believed to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital to be treated for life threatening head injuries but he tragically died yesterday (Wednesday).

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drug driving and has since been released under investigation.

Police Constable John Harrison-Gough, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “First and foremost I want to extend my sincere condolences to the family of the man that passed away yesterday.

“We are working to provide them with support from specially trained officers as they come to terms with their loss.

“Our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing and we are still appealing for anyone with information to contact us.”
