Increased sentence decision 'sends a clear message'

Date published: 12 September 2018

A man from Greater Manchester has had his sentence increased after being found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to a young baby.

Stephen Wenlock was jailed back in June after being convicted of attacking the one-month old girl, with judges at Manchester Crown Court sending him to prison for eight years.

Wenlock was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm when the girl suffered multiple injuries including skull fractures, bleeding and swelling to her brain.

A toxicological examination found Wenlock had taken amphetamine at the time of the attack.

However, the Solicitor General, Robert Buckland QC MP, referred the case to the Court of Appeal as he felt the sentence was too low.

The Court of Appeal agreed and has increased Wenlock’s jail term to ten years.

Speaking after the hearing, the Solicitor General said: “I am pleased the Court of Appeal has agreed to increase the sentence for this brutal attack on a vulnerable baby girl.

“I hope this sends a clear message that such abuse will not be tolerated.”
