A thug who left a partially blind man fighting for his life with a fractured skull and a blood clot after an attack in Oldham, has been sent to prison.

35-year old Liam Bottomley, of no fixed address, admitted attacking his victim back in March as he was walking through the Salmon Fields area of Royton.

Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard how the victim, believed to be in his 20s, was walking along the pavement, listening to his music and smoking cannabis when he was approached by Bottomley.

The 35-year old asked the man for a smoke of his joint, a request which was refused as the man continued his walk.

Bottomley became enraged and threw a punch at the man, which he managed to dodge.

Bottomley then pulled out a knife, scaring the victim to such an extent that he didn’t see another punch coming which hit him in the face.

He fell to the floor but was able to pick himself up as Bottomley walked away.

The partially blind man returned home believing his injuries were only minor but later went to hospital where it was found he had a fractured skull and a blood clot that could have proved fatal.

Bottomley pleaded guilty to one count of causing grievous bodily harm and one count of possessing a knife.

He was jailed for 20 months.
