Catch up with the latest Oldham maternity services news

The Royal Oldham Hospital is inviting pregnant women and their families to a free maternity services talk taking place tomorrow (Tuesday).

The free ‘Medicine for Members’ event will take place tomorrow between 2pm-3pm in the Education Centre at The Royal Oldham.

The hospital is giving mums-to-be the opportunity to find out more about the maternity services available to pregnant women and their families across the Northern Care Alliance’s Oldham and North Manchester hospital sites.

As part of the event, Simon Mehigan, Divisional Director of Midwifery and Gynaecology will be giving an overview of the services available, as well as details of the work being undertaken by the Trust to reduce the number of stillbirths and babies requiring neonatal support.

Mr Mehigan said: “Last year, our hospitals helped just over 9,000 babies into the world, including 107 sets of twins.

"We employ over 400 midwives and maternity support workers across two hospitals and in the communities we serve.

"Our teams provide care to women on our two labour wards and in our two birth centres.

"We also support those women who choose to give birth at home, so our teams are very busy supporting pregnant women and their families to have the best birth they can.

“We’ll be updating mums about the work we’re doing to work towards the government’s target to halve the number of stillbirths in England by 2025 and reduce the number of babies born on or around their due date that unexpectedly have to be admitted to our neonatal units.

“Our teams are working hard to meet the recommendations set out by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in a national review of maternity services – the ‘Better Births’ Report, published in 2016, which outlined a target of 20% of women receiving continuity of carer by April 2019.

"We’ll be telling mums more about what we’re doing to meet that target.

“As you can see, our teams have a lot to update pregnant women and their families about.

"I would encourage mums to come along, find out more about what we do and use this opportunity to ask any questions they have about our maternity services.”

All are welcome to attend.

To book your place, please contact Angela Greenwood on 01706 517302 or e-mail: membership@pat.nhs.uk.

The event is free and is one of a series of ‘Medicine for Members’ events arranged to give the public and the Trust’s public members a greater insight into their local hospital and the services it provides.

So far, more than 12,500 people have signed up to become Trust members.
