Former Athletic player, assistant manager and coach Tommy Wright has pleaded not guilty to allegations that he took a bribe as part of a national newspaper sting.
Fifty-two-year old Wright, from Barnsley, denied two counts of accepting a bribe between April and September, 2016.
He’s one of three people charged in connection with the investigation which started after an article published in the Telegraph newspaper looking at English football and the activities of players’ agents.
Wright, who made well over 100 appearances for Athletic during two seperate playing spells, later returned to Boundary Park as John Sheridan’s assistant manager before linking up with him again in his current role as number two at Carlisle United.
All three men, including 47-year old football agent Dax Price from Sittingbourne and 62-year old Giuseppe Pagliara, from Manchester, denied two counts of paying and facilitating a bribe.
They’ve all been bailed to appear at Southwark Crown Court on October 22.
