UPDATED: City hotel death was murder

Police investigating the death of a man in a Manchester city centre hotel room are treating it as murder.

Shortly after 5.30am yesterday (Wednesday) police were called to Portland Street to reports that a man had fallen from the fifth floor of the Britannia Hotel.

Officers attended but the man, believed to be in his 20s, died at the scene.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

While at the scene, responding officers gained entry to a room on the first floor of the hotel where they found another man, also believed to be in his 20s.

He too was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives have launched a murder investigation into the death of the man found in the hotel room and a Home Office post mortem examination is taking place today (Thursday).

Detective Inspector Andy Butterworth, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “This is a complex incident that has sadly led to the death of two men.

"My thoughts and sympathies are with the friends and family of the men.

“Although the investigation remains in its early stages and we are keeping an open mind into the full circumstances, we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

“I would appeal to anyone who might have seen something, or those with information that might help this investigation, to please get in touch with police.”
