Oldham remembers - 100 years on

Date published: 09 November 2018

A range of remembrance events will be taking place across Oldham to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

Tens of thousands of men, women and children lost their lives during the First World War, and in subsequent conflicts, either on the battlefield or on the home front.

Here in Oldham we suffered significant losses and remembrance services are held each year to acknowledge this.

As well as annual district services, there are lots of other events taking place this year.

These include an exhibition being held at Gallery Oldham called ‘Stories of Sacrifice’ – running from November 5 to December 1 – which is a special touring exhibition dedicated to the bravery and sacrifice of Muslim soldiers who fought for Britain during the First World War.

You can honour those who lost their lives by attending the Festival of Remembrance at The Queen Elizabeth Hall on Friday, November 9.

Councillor Cath Ball, Lead Member for Oldham Remembers, said: “It is so important that we remember those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict.

“Oldham, like many other places, holds the people who sacrificed their lives to keep us safe closely in our hearts – and the vast array of events that take place across the borough demonstrate this.

“I urge local residents to attend a remembrance event this year, in particular given the significance of the date. It goes without saying that we will never forget – but our physical presence affirms our gratitude.”
