Police charge teenager with throwing firework

Date published: 02 November 2018

Police investigating an incident in an Ashton park earlier this week have charged a teenager with throwing a firework at a person.

It was at around 7pm on Monday (October 29) as the victim, who wasn't seriously injured, was walking through King George V playing fields on Canterbury Street in Ashton.

Officers took to Facebook hours after the incident to say they’d arrested a teenager on suspicion of attempted GBH in connection with what happened.

They’ve now updated us with the news that they’ve charged a 16-year old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, with having committed an offence under section 80 of the Explosives Act 1875 (throw, cast or fire any fireworks in or into any highway, street, thoroughfare, road or public place.)

He’s been bailed to appear in court on Tuesday, November 6.

The incident came just days after the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police called for a ban on the sale of fireworks to members of the public in a bid to curb anti-social behaviour involving the explosive.

Ian Hopkins claimed they should only be sold to people who are to stage a professional display.
