A man has been arrested in connection with an investigation into the rape of a teenage girl in Tameside on Tuesday night (November 6).

It was shortly after 10pm when police were called to reports that a teenager had been raped in a wooded area near Cavendish Street in Ashton.

An investigation was subsequently launched and yesterday (Wednesday), officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Ashton CID office arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of rape.

He remains in custody for questioning.

The victim, a 17-year-old girl, is continuing to receive support from specially trained officers.

Detective Sergeant Joe Harrop, of Greater Manchester Police’s Tameside Borough, said: “We have been carrying out numerous lines of enquiry since the initial report was made last night and we now have an 18-year-old in custody arrested on suspicion of rape.

“I want to stress that our investigation remains in the early stages and continue to urge anybody with information to contact police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 9353 or 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
