Woman dies after collision in Middleton

A woman has died following a collision in Middleton, which injured a man and left another under arrest on suspicion of dangerous and drink driving.

It was shortly after 11.55pm on Friday (November 9) when police were called to reports of a collision between a black Peugeot 3008 and two pedestrians on Rochdale Road in Middleton.

The pedestrians - a 21-year-old woman and an 48-year-old man - were taken to hospital where the woman sadly died from her injuries.

The man suffered a broken wrist and severe bruising but has since been released from hospital.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and drink driving. He remains in custody for questioning.

Rochdale Road was closed at the junction with Mellalieu Street and Long Street but has since reopened.

Police Inspector Danny Byrne, of Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “A young woman tragically lost her life and a man was injured following this collision and we have specially trained officers supporting her family as they process this devastating news.

“A section of Rochdale Road was closed whilst investigative enquiries were carried out and while we have a man in custody, I would continue to urge anyone with any information that could assist our enquiries to please get in touch.

“I’m particularly keen to here from anyone who saw the collision or the Peugeot driving beforehand to contact us."
