MP supporting work protecting War graves

Date published: 27 November 2018

Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon has shown his support for the continuing excellent work done by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The Commission honours 1.7m men and women who died in the First and Second World Wars, ensuring they will never be forgotten.

Working in over 150 countries in 23,000 locations, they also hold a large volume of records for those searching out family member graves.

We have all seen images of immaculate white headstones in cemeteries in countries like France and Belgium, but almost everywhere in the UK will have graves too.

In Oldham West and Royton, we have the following:

·         Bardsley Holy Trinity has 1 WW2 grave.

·         Chadderton St Matthew has 14 WW1 and 9 WW2 graves.

·         Hollinwood St Margaret’s has 1 WW1 grave.

·         Chadderton Cemetery has 74 WW1 and 49 WW2 graves as well as a Cross of Sacrifice.

·         Hollinwood Cemetery has 44 WW1 and 35 WW2 graves.

·         Royton Cemetery has 22 WW1 and 14 WW2 graves.

Mr McMahon said: “Last week in Parliament I was fortunate enough to meet with workers from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

"I am supporting their work, and I hope you can too.

“If you are visiting and pass by a war grave, please do as I will and show it some attention.”

Meanwhile, Mr McMahon also attended ‪a very moving service of remembrance in Oldham on Sunday (pictured above), where the laying of the Standard of the 10th Manchester Regiment and the Dedication of the New Memorial took place.

He added: ‪”It was extremely thoughtful and powerful, and a reminder of the sacrifice of so many entrusting us with maintaining the peace.”
