Travel training forum is making its mark

An event held to celebrate life-changing work around public transport welcomed a special visitor.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham attended the latest Greater Manchester Travel Training Forum (GMTTF) to witness the revolutionary effect that their work has had on people’s lives.

The forum brings together travel trainers from across the region who help young people that face difficulty using public transport, giving them the key skills required to access it safely and most importantly, independently.

The support provided through travel training can be either short or long term, depending on the needs of the individual.

The special event was held to enable trainees, their families and trainers to celebrate the positive impact the training has had on their lives.

Speaking after the event, Mr Burnham said: “It really was inspirational to hear how this excellent scheme has enriched the lives of so many people, not just the young people who receive the training but also their parents and their carers too.

“Crucially it builds confidence and self-esteem and can potentially open up new areas of social, education and employment opportunities for those taking part.

“It also makes them a more visible part of their community, which is positive for both them and society.”

The event was opened by Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, Councillor Mark Aldred.

He said: “Being able to use a bus, a train or a tram is something that most of us take for granted but for some people it can be a daunting or a challenging experience.

“Thankfully, via the Greater Manchester Travel Training Forum, there is an excellent support network out there which can help people develop crucial skills, unlock their potential and achieve their ambitions.

“It was truly heart-warming to hear examples of these young people have prospered thanks in part to the training.”

GMTTF is co-ordinated by Transport for Greater Manchester and links all the local authority travel trainers and third sector providers across the region.

The forum meets quarterly and provides an ideal place to exchange ideas and support one another.  Membership of the forum is free and more information can be found at the GMTTF webpage.
