Donations sought after spate of burglaries at Shaw charity shop

Date published: 14 December 2018

The Children’s Society charity shop on Market Street in Shaw is asking for additional donations after it suffered from a fifth break-in in just over three years.

Thieves stole takings and a tablet device, which had been donated as a raffle prize, on the night of November 27, 2018.

The latest break-in happened just two weeks after the last burglary on the night of November 13.

Each time thieves smashed the front window have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Shop Manager Carol Forshaw said: “It is so heart-breaking, not only for the staff and volunteers here, it also has an impact on the children we help across Manchester and the rest of England.

"The money we raise from our stores should support vulnerable children and young people - instead we are having to pay out more money on insurance, repairing the damage and improving security.”

The income generated from charity shops plays a vital role in supporting the work of the Children’s Society.

Last year across Greater Manchester  the charity worked with 751 children and young people.

However, incidents like these means children could be missing out on support because of lost income.

To make up for these callous acts staff are calling on locals to donate.

You can give goods, cash or even time, by becoming a volunteer.

To donate please visit to the shop at 74, Market Street, or go online: www.childrenssociety.org.uk
