Events running throughout Oldham to mark Hate Crime Awareness Week

Hate Crime Awareness Week

Oldham is hosting a series of events in support of Greater Manchester’s annual Hate Crime Awareness Week, which runs until Sunday.

Coffee mornings, script writing workshops and even drama sessions will help local residents gain a better understanding of what hate crime is, and how to access support.
 
These events are funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and organised by local community groups and GM Police. 

Their aim is to ensure residents understand how they can help to report this crime and prevent it in their area.

Hate crime is an act of violence or hostility that is directed at a person or group because of who they are or what they think they are.

It comes in many different forms such as physical attacks, a threat of attack and verbal abuse or insults, and anyone can be affected by such incidents.

Many hate crimes go unreported, which is why these events are taking place to help those who are suffering in silence.

Councillor Ateeque Ur Rehman, Cabinet Member for Police and Community Safety, said: “Hate crime has no place in Oldham. Everyone has the right to feel safe, to live without fear and hostility from others because of who they are.

“We all have a responsibility to do our bit and stand against hatred, so I would encourage you all to come to any of the events this week and find out how to help eradicate hate crime and support those who are suffering in silence.”

They also say that if you have been affected by a hate crime, even if you’re unsure that you’ve been a victim, it is important that you speak to someone.

In an emergency call 999 and in a non-emergency call 101 or go to a nearby police station and report it.
