Drink and drug driver jailed after hit and run in Oldham

A drink and drug driver has been jailed after a teenage boy was killed and another left with life changing injuries in hit and run collision in Oldham.

At around 2.55am on Saturday 10th November 2018, 17-year-old Trent Warburton was cycling across the pedestrian crossing at the junctions between Oldham Road and Hollinwood Avenue in Oldham, he had a 19-year-old man riding on the back of his bike.

As they crossed the road a grey Vauxhall Insignia collided with them after failing to stop at the traffic lights, the driver then failed to stop at the scene.

Trent sadly died in hospital a short time later and his friend spent a considerable amount of time in hospital receiving treatment to a fractured skull and broken legs.

Today, (Friday 5 July 2019) 28- year old Jamie Campbell from Oldham has been sentenced to 8-years in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has also been disqualified from driving for eight years.

He was sentenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

Sergeant Brian Orr from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said, “Trent Warburton was a young man with his whole life ahead of him. His life was tragically cut short when Jamie Campbell decided to get into his car whilst high on drugs.

“My thoughts continue to be with Trent’s family and I hope today’s sentence can go some way to help them as they continue to grieve their loss.

“Trent’s friend was left with life changing injuries, the impact of that night will be with him for the rest of his life – he continues to have my thoughts and best wishes as he continues his recovery.

“Jamie Campbell will spend the next 8-years in prison, where he will have plenty of time to consider the fact he has taken one life and caused irreparable damage to another – I hope he spends some time contemplating how his recklessness and selfishness will have real lasting impact on the lives of many others.”
