Shaw cyclist takes Tour of Britain

The famous Tour of Britain has started this weekend in Scotland (7th September) and today cyclists will take to the streets of Berkwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle-upon-Tyne in stage three of the race.

The race will see professionals riding across Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside- in stage 8 (final stage) of the event earlier next week.

21-year old Matt Walls from Shaw is part of the Great Britain Cycling Team that are among the twenty teams competing in the Tour of Britain after weeks of intense training.

Matt attended St. Josephs Primary School and Crompton House Secondary School in Oldham.

Speaking to the Oldham Chronicle he said, “Knowing that my family are going to be there watching on stage eight because it literally goes through Shaw, my home town.

“It sort of gives you that extra little bit to push on when you need it the most.

“I’ve been out in Girona for a few weeks getting some good training in, before that I had a few races.

“So yeah I’ve had some good prep going into it and I seem to be going pretty well at the minute so I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and seeing what we can do.”

The Tour of Britain ahas attracted a field of world-class riders for it’s 16th edition this year.
