Jim McMahon MP welcomes The Radclyffe School to Parliament

Date published: 05 March 2020

On Tuesday (3rd March) Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon OBE welcomed a delegation of students and staff from The Radclyffe School in Chadderton to Parliament.

After receiving a tour of the Palace of Westminster by Parliamentary authorities, the group of students got to chat with and probe their local MP, on the work of a Member of Parliament.

Speaking after the visit Jim said, “It was great to welcome a group of pupils and teachers from Radclyffe to Parliament this afternoon.

Political education is absolutely vital, and I don’t think there’s currently enough of it in the UK, so it was a good to talk to them about roles and responsibilities of an MP, and hopefully they learned something from the experience too!”

“Politics is ever changing, but one thing that doesn’t change is the immense feeling of pride and privilege that comes with serving your community. Hopefully at least a few of the students were inspired by their visit and they want to get involved in and engaged with politics at the earliest opportunity.”

“The school climate strikes over the last few months have shown just how engaged our young people can be with really serious issues, maybe its time we listen to their concerns and take them seriously, there are issues that they’ll have to live with the consequences of long after I’ve stopped being an MP.”

“If you want your school or college or any type of educational group to come to Parliament you can book a trip online, and as long as there’s no clash in my diary I should be able to come along and answer a few questions like this event.”
