195 rogue drivers attempted to visit one of Oldham’s treasured beauty spots over Easter weekend despite the site being closed.

They were thwarted by a professional security team who manned barriers at Dovestones Reservoir at Greenfield.

And Protec, funded by the partnership of United Utilities, Oldham Council and the RSPB were praised for their work.

Kate Hanley, RSPB site manager said: “They  have done a fantastic job so far in keeping Dovestone shut to cars during this difficult time.

“Thank you to everyone who has stayed away from Dovestone over the last few weeks. We appreciate that it's not easy to stay at home, especially during the nice weather, but staying home, staying safe, protecting the NHS and saving lives really matters right now.

“So we ask that no-one — apart from residents and staff fulfilling essential duties —drives to Dovestones  until restrictions have been lifted. Keep up the good work everyone!"

Vehicles numbers turned away were: Good Friday 76, Saturday 69, Easter Sunday 12 and Monday 38.

Locally residents expressed mounting frustration with visitors holding picnics and taking walks across Saddleworth during the weekend.
