IOPC discontinues investigation into GMP's handling of Yousef Makki's murder

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has today released a statement confirming they have discontinued their investigation into Greater Manchester Police’s handling of Yousef Makki’s murder investigation.

The have confirmed they found no potential misconduct by any individual officer, and acknowledging that a number of changes to procedures will be implemented as a result of learnings identified by the internal review.

Assistant Chief Constable Mabs Hussain said:

“My thoughts go out to Yousef’s family to whom this news will bring little comfort in their quest for justice for the murder of their son.

"It is important that we conducted a thorough review of our investigation into the tragic circumstances surrounding Yousef’s death, which the IOPC has recognised.

"This remains a difficult time for the Makki family and I hope this brings some reassurance of our commitment to reviewing our actions.”

Yousef Makki was 17 years old, when he was stabbed to death on March 1st, 2019 in the affluent, middle class area of Hale Barns, near Altrincham in Greater Manchester.

During the four week trial, it was alleged by the defence that the Yousef first pulled out a knife on the night of his death, following an argument with his friends.

However, during the criminal investigation that followed Yousef’s death, no knife was found containing Yousef’s DNA and his family maintain it would not be in his character to carry a weapon.

Both Greater Manchester Police and Cheshire Police referred themselves to IOPC regarding 'any conduct issues' and responses to incidents 'prior to the death of Youseff Makki'.
