Police are advising motorists visiting a popular Oldham beauty spot to consider 'other destinations' after chaos came to the scene yesterday (Thursday).
The Saddleworth and Lees Neighbourhood Policing Team made their move after reports of scores of vehicles parked illegally at Binn Green near Dovestone reservoir yesterday ahead of the site being officially opened today.
Now officers are appealing to the public to maintain social distancing and sensible parking if visiting the reservoir.
A spokesman said: ‘It has already suffered overcrowding issues which could potentially become unsafe if too many people visit.
"Police will be required to act if vehicles are parked dangerously, causing an obstruction or contravening the double white line regulations.”
They added: “We ask people to be aware of the potential for overcrowding and consider visiting other destinations for safe exercise.”
United Utilities, who control the site with partners, said official government advice now allows people to drive to the countryside.
"Dovestone was still closed yesterday so it is difficult to see how keeping the site closed would stop those who choose to park illegally," said a UU spokesperson.
"We have informed the police about the situation."
Earlier, in a statement, UU urged visitors to be 'courteous’, urging they to observe social distancing and follow specific guidance and signage at the site.
They said: “While the car parks and gated entrances are now open, toilets and other facilities on site will remain closed for the time-being in order to maintain safe distances between visitors.
“Car park pay-stations will not be in use to help minimise any physical contact.
Paula Steer is United Utilities' director responsible for health and safety and estate management.
She explained: "We know how much people enjoy visiting the beautiful countryside around our reservoirs, and it will come as welcome news the Government's lockdown restrictions are beginning to lift.
"It's important to remember, though, that this is a phased approach and we are relying on visitors to be public-spirited.
“Please be courteous to our employees and local residents - reservoirs are their workplace and home - and be prepared for it to be busy.
"You may struggle to find a parking space, and if that happens it may be better to come back another day rather than block narrow roads or put yourself or others at risk in crowded areas."
Yorkshire Water owns a large number of reservoirs in Yorkshire, many of which have managed car parks and visitor facilities.
Although paths have remained open for walkers and cyclists who live nearby during the lockdown, their car parks will remain closed say reports,
Dovestone reservoir is not managed by Yorkshire Water, but is subject to the same restrictions on parking.
Today locals fear a deluge uge of motorists will descend in the Greenfield site over the weekend.
Taking to social medía, they are saying the site should have remained closed.
