Police and conservationists are investigating after reports of baby goslings and ducklings being stolen from the Salmon Fields fishing lake at Royton.
Outraged posts went into overdrive on social media on Sunday after claims the tiny chicks were being sold on Facebook and Gumtree.
Police said an investigation is under way and the RSPB have been notified.
“Neighbourhood officers will be stepping up patrols in the area. If you have any information that could assist please email the local team at: oldhamborough@gmp.police.uk or send a private message,” they asked.
