Royton-born Wendy Muldowney
Royton born mother of two Wendy Muldowney has lived and worked in the sunshine island of Tenerife more than 20 years.
Here, she gives an exclusive update to the Chronicle as to how life steadies in one of Oldham's favourite holiday destinations.
"We are on the final stretch here in The Canary Islands , after starting a severe lockdown on the 14th March.
"Now, nearly 13 weeks later, we have the elusive finishing line in sight. Saying that, the line could well be moved backwards depending on our behaviour and numbers of coronavirus cases.
"We have to abide by the rules using masks in public places and respect social distancing as well as using hand gel when and where necessary. But apart from that, it looks like things are getting close to normal here.
"There is lots of traffic on the roads, the big shops are open in the big industrial estates, but when you go into the tourist areas we are still looking like ghost towns.
"The beaches are open with allotted areas and timetables — always respecting distances.
"The streets in Santiago del Teide are disinfected from very early morning. I’ve just been to the medical centre and before it opened, the disinfection company turned up with their machines before anyone could get near.
"Maggie, a fellow owner, has has Scoobies snack bar here in Puerto Santiago. I was asking her how things have been for her during lockdown. Obviously things have been dificult and she’s been closed for a long time but she’s now opening only three days a week with 50% occupation. She’s not making money, but she loves looking after and cooking for the locals.
“We have still a way to go before life gets back to how it was before lockdown but one of the big questions is: will it ever be like it was before?
"I’m looking forward to getting back to work and seeing my work friends and our amazing guests that come and stay in the Royal Sun Resort in Los Gigantes.
"Hopefully if you in the UK abide by the rules, keep washing your hands, stay home and stay safe we will be able to see you and my family and friends soon on the other side."
