Brighten Oldham care home residents' day this Sunday

Date published: 02 October 2020

Oldham Council are celebrating Grandparents Day by sending messages of love and support to people living in care homes across the town.

According to Age UK, more than one million people over the age of 75 go for over a month without speaking to anyone - which is even more likely to be the care in the current climate.

Unfortunately the elderly population are at a much higher risk of complications from COVID-19.

That's why care homes are limiting or preventing visitors.

This Grandparents Day is a chance to make sure they feel appreciated and remembered.

The Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, Cllr Zahid Chauhan, said: “There are a number of local residents living in care homes who are unable to have visits from their loved ones at the moment, or who may have little or no contact with people living outside their home.

"We want to show them that they haven’t been forgotten during this pandemic and that ‘Oldham Cares’ about each and every one of them.

"By asking young people across the borough to send kind messages or drawings, we’re hoping to brighten their day and make a real difference to their wellbeing.”

If you want to get involved and send a message, you can email it to: quality@oldham.gov.uk and Oldham Council will arrange for these to be passed on.
