Tribute to hero PC Warby

The memorial plaque on the imposing bench in an iconic moorland setting sums up a community’s love and respect for a former police officer.

It says: “PC 4991 Martin “Warby” Warburton. A giant of a man ...A proper copper. Known and loved by many. A true Saddleworth legend.”

The simple, moving tribute was written as a lasting memory to the area’s famous laughing policeman who died last Christmas.

And the bench itself sits on Knowl Top Lane, across the road at the foot of the path leading to Pots and Pans, facing the Warburton family farm.

Jessica Moreland, president of Dovestone WI, organised a mammoth fundraiser at Uppermill Civic Hall to celebrate a man described by colleagues as “the cornerstone of community policing”.

She said: “We have been given the blessing and permission from his family, as this is a most befitting and lasting legacy of the man who meant so much to so many people in our community.

"It is a lovely location, not only for Martin’s family, but for everyone to enjoy while out walking.

“It will also be good place for those to rest before they begin the climb to view the cenotaph at Pots and Pans and surrounding countryside.”

The Dovestone WI had earlier launched a JustGiving Page, but overall the event, backed by donations from Saddleworth morris men and Saddleworth rotary club raised more than £930.

Dovestone WI unveiled the memorial bench, along with three of his grandchildren, Ashleigh Holroyd, Joe Sothcott and Sam Gill, who are pictured (top) with Dovestones WI president Jessica.

“The family still have yet to choose a charity of Warbys choice, to receive the remaining money left over from the fundraiser. But now family, friends and colleagues can all enjoy the legacy that was ‘Warby’,” Jessica added.

“The awesome Saddleworth community have done it again.

"We would like to thank one and all that took part or contributed to our fundraising coffee morning.

“And grateful thanks to McClintocks Farm, Paul’s Meats Ltd, JW Buckley’s bakery and DWI members and committee who baked some fabulous things to sell.”

Raffle prizes were donated by the Old Bell, Delph, Reclamation Rooms, Uppermill, Hair by Kathryn, Uppermill, Not Just Travel Co, Lorraine Robinson, Saddleworth Boutique, Uppermill, Jules Jakes Temple Spa and the Hair and Beauty Lounge in Delph.

PC Warburton’s daughter Lisa said: “The wording on the plaque is great tribute to dad.

"My family and I would like to thank Dovestones WI and everyone who contributed to this wonderful tribute.”
