Two-thirds of people want a job-rich, greener, fairer Britain after Covid

Polling commissioned by a cross-party group of MPs has found overwhelming backing across the UK for a job creation programme that will reshape day-to-day life, restructure local neighbourhoods and create a fairer, more equal society.

Debbie Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, is also the vice-chair of the All Party Parliamentary group (APPG) on the Green New Deal which commissioned the polling, and she backs the findings.

Mrs Abrahams said: “The tide of public opinion has now turned from words to action on climate.

“When the Prime Minister announces his 10-point action plan for greening the economy we need to see ambition that can meet the scale of the challenge and a guarantee of well-paid jobs for millions that can level up the nation and offset the worst economic impacts of the pandemic.”

The all party group spent the summer engaging with people across the country on what a post-Covid society and economy should look like and have published their findings in a report titled: How to Reset: Policies to deliver on the public desire for a fairer, greener Britain after Covid - click here to read the full report: www.reset-uk.org

More than 55,000 people took part in the process through a series of online workshops, interviews, surveys and opinion polls.

The MPs and peers also examined evidence from almost 40 organisations from the NFU to Nesta and heard evidence from 17 expert witnesses.

The local MP added: “Evidence from the Reset report shows people in Britain, overwhelmingly, want to live in a much more sustainable, just and compassionate country.

“The public wants politicians and the government to take the bold action we need to change our country, and our world, for the better and it is completely possible to make those changes.

“The Covid pandemic has also shown us just how quickly communities and business can change things for the better when we really put our minds to it.

“It's time to start making the changes that are necessary and really make it happen.”
