The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ginny Alexander
Oldham’s kind-hearted Mayor has donated £300 to Friends of Chernobyl's Children in Oldham - a registered charity which works to relieve the suffering of children from the resounding after-effects of the 1986 nuclear disaster.
The tragedy is still devastating families across poverty stricken Belarus and, in conjunction with the charity, Oldham arranges yearly visits for children from the most desperate circumstances in the contaminated area of Belarus.
However, this year Covid restrictions have prevented the visit.
Said Mayor Cllr Ginny Alexander: “For a month each year the children receive recuperative healthcare, English lessons and, most importantly, lots of loving tender care from their UK host families.
“They stay with volunteers who then take them out and show them the difference between their country and ours, the different learning styles in schools and events and places, all funded by volunteers.
“I loved meeting the children from Chernobyl last year.
"They enjoyed being in the Council Chambers and we all had a great time doing a question and answer session.”
