Local man makes history naming a street in the Alt neighbourhood

Date published: 30 March 2021

A local man has made his own piece of history by naming a street on First Choice Homes Oldham’s (FCHO) new housing development in the Alt neighbourhood.

Alan Tupman’s suggestion of ‘Pear Tree View’ was chosen as the winner of FCHO’s street naming competition, out of 145 entries from people across the borough.

The competition was run by housing association FCHO, which is transforming a formerly vacant plot of land off Cherry Avenue in Alt.

In its place the social landlord is working with development partner, Tyson Construction, to build 38 much needed properties, comprising  of 10 two-bedroom and 28 three-bedroom family homes.

It is also planning improvements to the surrounding area to benefit local people.

Oldham borough residents were asked to submit their best suggestions connected to the theme of trees and fruit to name the new street at the development and play their role in the story of the scheme.

Along with having his street name displayed at the development, Mr Tupman has also won a tablet device, donated by Tyson Construction.

Winner, Mr Tupman, has lived in the Alt neighbourhood for over 40 years with his family. He said: “I’m born and bred in this area and I’ve brought my family up here too.

My kids told me about the competition and to have the chance to name a local street and win the competition is great news. I’m looking forward to seeing the street sign go up.”

Judging the competition entries was a panel made up of Alt resident and FCHO customer, Donna Brindle; Councillor Jenny Harrison; and representatives from FCHO, including Director of Development, Joel Owen.

Joel Owen said Pear Tree View is a worthy winner: “Thank you to everyone who entered the competition – your brilliant suggestions made it difficult to choose a winner. It was fantastic to see so many people want to play their part in this development in Alt.

“We wanted a street name which was in keeping with others in the neighbourhood and judges unanimously decided Pear Tree View fits the bill perfectly.

"This build supports our commitment to invest £160m and build 850 new homes over the next six years and I’m looking forward to seeing the scheme progress.”

Work at the Cherry Ave development began in spring 2021 and the homes will be finished in August 2022.
