Local MP's and dignitaries have paid tribute after it was announced earlier today (Friday) that Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, had died aged 99.

Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon Tweeted: "HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was a steadfast support for Her Majesty over decades of loyal service.

"My prayers and condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and his family."

Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams added: "My sincere condolences to HM the Queen, the Royal Family and all their friends."

Ashton and Failsworth MP Angela Rayner Tweeted: "Rest in Peace HRH Prince Philip.

"Since World War II and for seven decades since, the Duke of Edinburgh embodied the values of public service that we all hold dear and cherish.

"Today as we mourn his passing, my thoughts are with the Queen and her family on this very sad day."

The Leader of the Opposition and Liberal Democrat Group on Oldham Council, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, said: “Today is a day of national mourning.

"Like many British subjects, I have lived my whole life knowing only our Queen as my Sovereign and Prince Phillip as her Consort.

"His Royal Highness Prince Phillip faithfully and selflessly served this country and the institution of the monarchy for decades, and was a stalwart support for Her Majesty, The Queen, throughout her long reign."

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “On behalf of the people of Greater Manchester, I want to convey our deepest condolences to Her Majesty the Queen, her children, grandchildren and other members the Royal Family on the passing of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.

“Prince Philip gave a lifetime of service to our country and was an ever-present in our lives at the side of the Queen, representing all our nations and regions at countless engagements over the years.

“He made many visits to our city-region and his work touched the lives of so many people here.

"For many years, Prince Philip acted as Chancellor of the University of Salford, from the time of its Royal Charter in 1967 right through to 1991.

"He remained a keen follower of the university thereafter, returning to meet new generations of students at the state-of-the-art MediaCity campus in 2012.

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s lifelong commitment to public service will be remembered with gratitude across Greater Manchester.”
