Group armed with 'knives and machetes' involved in fatal stabbing

A 25-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have released further details of the enquiry into the death of a 25-year-old man in Limeside yesterday.

It's understood there was a disturbance involving a group of men at the address on Fifth Avenue on Wednesday afternoon at around 5pm.

A blue Vauxhall Corsa pulled onto the street and a group of around five males - armed with knives and machetes - exited the vehicle before causing damage to a property.

The group subsequently fled the scene after being confronted by another male. As one of the group fled on foot he was fatally stabbed.

Emergency services attended and the 25-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.  

A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and a 35-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They have since been released under investigation.

Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward and assist police with their investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Butterworh of GMP's Major Incident Team, said: "As always, our thoughts are firmly with the family of the young man who has sadly lost his life and our main priority is ensuring we can provide them with the answers they desperately need.

"Our investigation is progressing at speed but we are confident there are people out there who are holding information that could greatly assist our enquiries.

"This incident occurred in a built up residential area, in broad daylight, so we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, seen a group of people behaving suspiciously in the area at the time or have dash-cam footage, to get in touch as a matter of urgency.

"Any information, no matter how small or insignificant you feel it may be, could be vital in ensuring we identify and bring the responsible party to justice."
