Heyside blaze: Surrounding roads are still closed

Date published: 25 June 2021

Some roads in Heyside are still closed this morning (Friday) after a blaze ripped though a waste facility on Mossdown Road last night.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that there no were injuries reported at the site, reportedly at Wheeldon Brothers Waste Ltd.

A GMFRS statement read late last night: "At 19.52 this evening (June 24) we received the first of several 999 calls in relation to a fire at a waste handling facility on Mossdown Road.

"This is a large fire that has spread to a neighbouring commercial unit.

"There are no reported injuries.

"Ten fire engines from across Greater Manchester, plus the aerial appliance, command unit, and a special hose-laying appliance are on the scene.

"Over 50 firefighters are working together to bring this large fire under control.

"The area of the fire spans 100m x 100m and the material burning is dirty, so we are asking everyone in the local area to stay away from the incident and keep doors and windows closed.

"Additionally, we are having to run high-volume hoses down some roads so expect traffic disruption and road closures as we fight this fire through the evening."

Oldham Council confirmed at approximately 8.30am this morning that road closures are still in place following the fire.

Road closures:

Salmon Fields at the junction of Higginshaw Lane

Higginshaw Lane at the junction of Turf Lane

Shaw Road / Salmon Fields is access only for deliveries
