Fans were peaceful at The Old Bank pub in Oldham
There was an electric atmosphere in the pubs across Oldham, where England’s historic final against Italy in the Euro 2020’s was screened last night, 11 July 2021.
Most of the night passed off without trouble, despite England narrowly losing out 3 -2 on penalties.
At The Old Bank in Oldham town centre, regulars of the pub had turned up at around 12.30pm, to secure a seat in front of their big screen.
Sharon, landlady of the venue, praised the behaviour of those who watched the match;
“There was a brilliant atmosphere in the pub, without any trouble.
“It’s a night I will always remember.
“It was so tense during the penalties and we had a few tears from grown men in here at the result.
“But overall it was steady all day and we want to thank those people who came down.”
England were able to score, in the opening minutes of the match, thanks to Luke Shaw, to take them one nil up into half time.
But Italy’s Leonardo Bonucci levelled the score in the second half, after a corner.
Gareth Southgate brought on Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford in the last few minutes, just in time for the young pair to take penalties.
The pair, along with Bukayo Saka, were all subject to racial abuse after the game, which marred the night, after they missed their penalties.
The England squad faced a tough task, as Italy were a strong side. They celebrated their 34th straight win under Roberto Mancini.
