Show house furniture finds a new home at Mahdlo

Date published: 21 July 2021

Mahdlo Youth Zone has given former show home furniture a new lease of life after it was donated by housebuilder Redrow.

The closure of Redrow’s show home at Saddleworth View in Oldham meant the housebuilder could offer a selection of items to Mahdlo for members and staff to use.

The youth zone, a registered charity for eight–19-year-olds (or up to 25 for young people with a disability), received a sofa, some chairs and electrical items such as a microwave, toaster and fridge that will all be put to good use by its members.

Open seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year, it offers an exciting range of activities and opportunities that all young people from across Oldham can access for just 50p as a member.

Claire Crossfield, development manager at Mahdlo Youth Zone, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the generous donation from Redrow of furniture and kitchen appliances.

"These will be utilised in our new independent living space, providing young people with the opportunity to learn the essential skills to live independently through various workshops such as cooking, budgeting and washing.

"As a charity we rely on the support of local businesses and the community to enable us to provide these opportunities for young people to be the best they can be.”

Redrow had previously donated £1,000 to the youth zone through its Oldham Community Fund - a voluntary fund which shared a total of £5,000 between good causes that help people and communities in the Oldham area.

The funding contributed to new equipment for a state-of-the-art sensory space.

Sian Pitt, sales director at Redrow Lancashire, said: “When we knew that the show home was closing due to it being sold, we decided that instead of re-using the furniture in another upcoming show home, we would donate it to a local good cause.

"We already had the connection with the youth zone through our community fund so we knew it was going to a good home.”

Just one home remains for sale at Saddleworth View, a three-bedroom detached Amberley priced at £312,995.

Redrow also has plans to build more than 200 new homes in nearby Cowlishaw.

The 25-acre development, located north of Oldham, will overlook a neighbouring golf course and will feature 205 new homes and five acres of green space, which will include a new orchard.
