National Trust rangers warn of fireworks ban on Marsden Moor.
Date published: 03 November 2021

Fireworks are banned on Marsden Moor year round.
As bonfire night approaches, National Trust rangers are warning the public not to let off any fireworks on Marsden Moor.
Fireworks are banned on open moorland in both Kirklees and Oldham by a PSPO (public space protection order.)
Using fireworks on the moors could result in a fine of up to £1,500.
In April this year, a moorland fire burnt for three days, destroying two square miles of habitat and causing £200,000 worth of damage. It’s believed it was started by a firework or firecracker.
Countryside Manager for the National Trust, Rosie Holdsworth said, “There’s no excuse for using fireworks anytime of the year in our countryside.
"As well as the possible fire risk, the debris and noises from fireworks can harm and scare wildlife. Our volunteers and rangers spend much of their valuable time clearing up litter from fireworks every year.”
“The moors will take years to recover from the damage caused by the most recent fire in April, which was most likely caused by a firework. It’s devastating to see this habitat destroyed.”
Marsden Moor is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). The area is known for its breeding bird habitat and is a popular site for rare curlews. It is also home to short-eared owl and mountain hares.
Recovery work following the fire has already begun, with 40,000 sphagnum moss plugs planted across Marsden Moor this autumn.
The moss helps to re-wet the moorland, reducing the risk of future fires. It also helps to restore peat and capture carbon. Most of the planting has been done by volunteers.
The ban on BBQs and fires on Marsden Moor runs all year round and is part of a PSPO. (Public Spaces Protection Order.) If you see a fire or a lit BBQ on Marsden Moor, please dial 999.
