Woman rescued in heavy snow in Denshaw

A 20-strong squad from Oldham Mountain Rescue Team (OMRT) saved an injured woman who slipped and injured her leg while walking hills above Denshaw Saddleworth.

The call-out at the joint request of police and North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, was triggered as snow began falling at its heaviest on Sunday lunchtime.

It came as the team with vehicles and personnel were supporting Dovestones WI Christmas Markets where one of its members was Father Christmas.

Said OMRT leader Rob Tortoishell: "Consequently we were able to respond swiftly and soon had team members with the lady.

"As she had been on the cold ground for some time, we quickly assessed her before packaging her in our extra warm winter casualty bag and onto the stretcher ready for the carry back to the road."

He explained: "When there is deep snow on the ground, sometimes the safest and most efficient way to transport a casualty on a stretcher is to 'sledge' them along; something we took full advantage of in this case.

"Once in the NWAS ambulance, she could be properly warmed up and assessed by paramedics before the onward journey to hospital.”

Part of the team returned to base to sort and dry all kit and  the remainder reported to Saddleworth Rugby Club to continue with their support of  the Christmas Markets.

20 OMRT personnel were involved for two hours and 10 minutes.
